Removing users from a Lab vs. an Organization

The Organization for your Quartzy account is your company or academic/government institution. Your Lab is your specific lab or team within your Organization.

There are two different user roles within an Organization (Org): Org Admins and Org Members. Each role has different permissions within Quartzy. Similarly, the Lab level also has two different user roles with differing editing privileges: Lab Admin and Lab Member.

The Organization level is where an Org Admin can manage and remove users to free up seats. Lab Admins who do not have Org Admin status can remove users from Labs, but doing so will not free up seats.

If you do not see the gear icon next to your Organization name, you do not have access to the organization-level settings, such as seat management.

When an Org Admin removes a user from a Lab, they will have the option to also remove the user from the Organization in order to free up that user’s seat:

When a Lab Admin without Org Admin status removes a user from a Lab, the user is only removed from the Lab and will retain their seat in the Organization.

Important: Removing a user from a Lab does not remove them from their seat in the Organization. An Org Admin must remove the user from the Organization as well in order to free up that user's seat.

What happens to the user’s items after they leave?

Inventory

When a user leaves, items that they owned will remain in the Inventory module.

The user will still be listed as the item owner on their inventory items, which a Lab Admin can update and edit.

Requests

When a user leaves, all their past requests will remain in the Lab.

The user's name will still be listed as the Requester on their old requests in order for the Lab to keep a proper record.
